Birbal’s Khichadi

एक बार सर्दी के दिन थे, अकबर और बीरबल एक झील के उस पार से गुजर रहे थे। अकबर रुक गया और अपनी उंगली को ठंडे पानी में डाल दिया और तुरंत यह कहते हुए बाहर निकाल दिया, "मुझे नहीं लगता कि इस ठंडे पानी में कोई भी एक रात को बनाए रख सकता है"। बीरबल ने इसे एक चुनौती के रूप में लिया और कहा कि वह किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति को खोजेगा जो ऐसा कर सकता है।
अकबर ने 1000 सोने के सिक्कों का वादा किया, जो कोई भी झील के ठंडे पानी में एक रात बिता सकता है। जल्द ही, बीरबल को एक गरीब आदमी मिला जो 1000 सोने के सिक्कों के लिए चुनौती देने को तैयार था। दो शाही रक्षकों द्वारा पहरा दिया गया, गरीब आदमी पूरी रात ठंड के पानी में खड़ा रहा। सुबह इनाम के लिए गरीब आदमी को अदालत ले जाया गया। राजा द्वारा यह पूछे जाने पर कि वह बर्फ़ीले पानी में कैसे खड़ा हो सकता है, आदमी ने जवाब दिया, "मेरे प्रभु, मैं एक दीपक को देख रहा था जो थोड़ी दूरी पर जल रहा था, और मेरी पूरी रात उसे देखती रही"। यह जानने पर, सम्राट ने कहा, "यह आदमी इनाम के योग्य नहीं है क्योंकि वह झील में खड़े होने का प्रबंधन कर सकता था क्योंकि वह दीपक से गर्म हो रहा था"।
उस गरीब व्यक्ति को निराशा और दिल टूटा हुआ महसूस हुआ और वह मदद के लिए बीरबल के पास पहुंचा। बीरबल अगले दिन अदालत में नहीं गए। अकबर ने इसका कारण जानने के लिए बीरबल का दौरा किया। अपने मनोरंजन के लिए, राजा ने बीरबल को लगभग 6 फीट ऊपर एक बर्तन के साथ आग के पास बैठा पाया। पूछताछ करने पर, बीरबल ने कहा, "मैं खिचड़ी पका रहा हूँ, मेरे प्रभु"। अकबर हँसने लगा और कहा कि असंभव था। बीरबल ने कहा, "यह संभव है मेरे राजा- अगर कोई गरीब आदमी थोड़ी देर में जलते हुए दीपक को देखकर गर्म रह सकता है, तो मैं इस खिचड़ी को उसी तरह से पका सकता हूं।" अकबर ने बीरबल की बात को समझा और गरीब आदमी को चुनौती दी।
Once on a cold winter day, Akbar and Birbal were passing across a lake. Akbar stopped and put his finger into the freezing water and immediately took it out saying, “I don’t think anyone can sustain a night in this cold water”. Birbal took that as a challenge and said that he would find someone who can do so.
Akbar promised a sum of 1000 gold coins to whoever could spend a night standing in the cold water of the lake. Soon, Birbal found a poor man who agreed to undertake the challenge for the 1000 gold coins. Guarded by two royal guards, the poor man spent the entire night standing in the freezing water. In the morning, the poor man was taken to court for the reward. On being asked by the king how he could stand in freezing water, the man replied, “My lord, I kept looking at a lamp that was burning at a distance, and spent my entire night looking at it”. On learning this, the emperor said, “This man is not worthy of the reward as he could manage to stand in the lake because he was getting warmth from the lamp”.
The poor man felt doomed and heart-broken, and he reached Birbal for help. Birbal didn’t go to the court the next day. Akbar visited Birbal to find the reason. To his amusement, the king found Birbal sitting beside the fire with a pot hanging almost 6 feet above it. On being enquired, Birbal said, “I am cooking khichadi, my lord”. Akbar started laughing and said that was impossible. Birbal said, “It is possible my king- if a poor man can stay warm by simply looking at the lamp burning at a distance, I can cook this khichadi the same way.” Akbar understood Birbal’s point and rewarded the poor man for the challenge.
