बादशाह अकबर के शासनकाल के दौरान बीरबल की बुद्धिमत्ता अद्वितीय थी। लेकिन अकबर के बहनोई को उससे बहुत जलन थी। उसने बादशाह से बीरबल की सेवाओं के साथ खदेड़ने और उसकी जगह उसे नियुक्त करने को कहा। उन्होंने पर्याप्त आश्वासन दिया कि वे बीरबल की तुलना में अधिक कुशल और सक्षम साबित होंगे। इससे पहले कि अकबर इस मामले पर कोई फैसला ले पाता, यह खबर बीरबल तक पहुंच गई।
बीरबल ने इस्तीफा दे दिया और चले गए। अकबर के बहनोई को बीरबल के स्थान पर मंत्री बनाया गया था। अकबर ने नए मंत्री का परीक्षण करने का निर्णय लिया। उसने उसे तीन सौ सोने के सिक्के दिए और कहा, “इन सोने के सिक्कों को ऐसे खर्च करो, जैसे मुझे इस जीवन में सौ सोने के सिक्के मिले; दूसरी दुनिया में सौ सोने के सिक्के और दूसरे सोने के सिक्के न तो यहां हैं और न ही।
मंत्री ने पूरी स्थिति को भ्रम और निराशा की भूलभुलैया माना। वह रातों की नींद हराम कर रहा था, इस बात की चिंता कर रहा था कि वह खुद को इस गंदगी से कैसे निकालेगा। हलकों में सोच उसे पागल बना रही थी। आखिरकार, अपनी पत्नी की सलाह पर उसने बीरबल की मदद मांगी। बीरबल ने कहा, “बस मुझे सोने के सिक्के दे दो। मैं बाकी काम संभाल लूंगा। ”
बीरबल हाथ में सोने के सिक्कों का थैला पकड़े शहर की सड़कों पर चला। उन्होंने अपने बेटे की शादी का जश्न मनाते हुए एक अमीर व्यापारी को देखा। बीरबल ने उसे सौ स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ दीं और विनम्रतापूर्वक कहा, “बादशाह अकबर आपको अपने बेटे की शादी के लिए शुभकामनाएँ और आशीर्वाद भेजता है। कृपया उनके द्वारा भेजे गए उपहार को स्वीकार करें। ”व्यापारी ने सम्मानित महसूस किया कि राजा ने इस तरह के कीमती उपहार के साथ एक विशेष दूत भेजा था। उन्होंने बीरबल को सम्मानित किया और उन्हें राजा के लिए उपहार के रूप में बड़ी संख्या में महंगे उपहार और सोने के सिक्कों का एक बैग दिया।
इसके बाद, बीरबल शहर के उस क्षेत्र में गए जहाँ गरीब लोग रहते थे। वहाँ उसने सौ स्वर्ण सिक्कों के बदले में भोजन और वस्त्र खरीदे और उन्हें सम्राट के नाम पर वितरित किया।
जब वह शहर वापस आया तो उसने संगीत और नृत्य का एक कार्यक्रम आयोजित किया। उसने उस पर सौ स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ खर्च कीं।
अगले दिन बीरबल ने अकबर के दरबार में प्रवेश किया और घोषणा की कि उन्होंने वह सब किया है जो राजा ने अपने बहनोई से करने के लिए कहा था। सम्राट जानना चाहता था कि उसने यह कैसे किया है। बीरबल ने सभी घटनाओं के दृश्यों को दोहराया और फिर कहा, “मैंने अपने बेटे की शादी के लिए व्यापारी को जो पैसा दिया था - आप इस धरती पर वापस आ गए हैं। मैंने जो पैसा गरीबों के लिए भोजन और कपड़े खरीदने में खर्च किया - वह आपको दूसरी दुनिया में मिलेगा। मैंने संगीत समारोह में जो पैसा खर्च किया है - वह आपको न तो यहां मिलेगा और न ही। ”अकबर के बहनोई ने उनकी गलती को समझा और इस्तीफा दे दिया। बीरबल को अपना स्थान वापस मिल गया।
Moral: दोस्तों पर आप जो पैसा खर्च करते हैं, वह किसी न किसी रूप में वापस कर दिया जाता है। दान पर खर्च किया गया धन भगवान से आशीर्वाद में परिवर्तित हो जाता है जो आपकी अनन्त संपत्ति होगी। सुखों पर खर्च किया गया धन तो दूर ही है। इसलिए जब आप अपना पैसा खर्च करते हैं, तो थोड़ा सोचो, अगर बहुत कुछ नहीं।

Birbal gave him a hundred gold currencies and said politely, "Emperor Akbar sends you best wishes and blessings for his son's wedding. Please accept the gift they sent. The merchant felt honored that the king had sent a special envoy with such a precious gift. He honored Birbal and gave him a large number of expensive gifts and a bag of gold coins as a gift to the king.
After this, Birbal went to the area of the city where the poor people lived. There he bought food and clothing in exchange for a hundred gold coins and distributed them in the name of the emperor.
When he returned to the city he organized a program of music and dance. He spent a hundred gold currencies on it.
The next day Birbal entered Akbar's court and announced that he had done what the king had asked his brother-in-law to do. The emperor wanted to know how he had done it. Birbal repeated the scenes of all the events and then said, "The money I gave to the businessman for my son's wedding - you are back on this earth." The money I spent in buying food and clothes for the poor - you will get it in another world. The money I have spent at the concert - you will neither get here nor there. Akbar's brother-in-law understood his mistake and resigned. Birbal finds his place back.
Moral: The money you spend on friends is returned in some form or the other. The money spent on charity is converted into blessings from God which will be your eternal wealth. Money spent on happiness is far away. So when you spend your money, think a little, if not a lot.
